Good question - the answer is that many Renesas people left Renesas for Rambus.
Rambus has built an excellent buffer chip team from Renesas - as well as from
their Inphi acquisition about six years ago - as well as internally.

Things changed somewhat there after IDT was sold to Renesas. Also, it's very good
for Rambus to be the only US supplier in the critical buffer / companion chip business.
The bottom line is that the datacenter won't work without the RCDs that go into the DIMMs -
and with a 40% market share (which Rambus has been repeatedly reiterating), Rambus plays
a critical role in the data center market.

Here's some examples of the moves from IDT / Renesas to Rambus. I

And the fact that they keep on coming is a good sign - I know that Rambus is
expanding in Atlanta:

PS: I could probably find more but the above is a good illustration.

Renesas is second to Rambus in the RDIMM RCDs at 6400 MT/s | RMBS Message Board Posts (investorvillage.com)

This was close, but Rambus got here first:

New 7200 MT/s RCD Supports Ambitious Server Roadmap - Rambus

Also, if you click on the link of the press release, you'll see that Rambus'
announcement here said "available today."

I can't find any Renesas blog or press release where they say that they're at
least sampling DDR5 RCDs at 7200 MT/s. They've announced client clock
drivers (CKDs) at that speed, but that's at speeds at or above 6400 MT/s.
And we're not there yet.

But we're not at 7200 MT/s for server RCDs yet either - but it's very good
to see Rambus leading the pack for the lucrative and fast moving data
center market.
