Vendors are looking to deliver multiservice products using IP as an infrastructure and are persuing carriers that are interested in implementing these environments.

In fact some ISP's and carriers already have, or are installing, high capacity IP networks to handle internet traffic. So naturally they would like to put other traffic on these nets as well. Furthermore some carriers (Qwest, Williams, US West, and others) are actually installing IP networks for voice bypass due for cost advantages and for delivery of differentiated/value added services.

Generally speaking IP is viewed as being more cost effective (the equipment costs less than switches, and management costs are perceived to be lower - not that everyone believes this last point). If multiservice IP networks can maintain quality and minimize delays (big IF's) then carriers will generally prefer these networks for their multiple use benefits and ability to deliver unique differentiated services since they tie in well to CTI.
