Read Replies (1) | Respond to WHAT REALLY HAPPENED WITH BENEDICT ARNOLD??? Benedict Arnold was an American born major general working closely with George Washington at the time... Washington fully trusted Benedict and the two of them were looking for a location along the Hudson River about 45 north of New York where they could easily spot British ships from a great distance... They found an area on the west bank of the river which protruded out into the river, this small peninsula of land gave Washington the ability to spot British ships from a long distance traveling up and down the river... They called this location the west point of the river... This was where they could place their canons and long range artillery... They worked together during the week and on the weekends Benedict went home to his wife Peggy who was very young and very pretty... Peggy Shippen's family was upper class, her father was a chief judge in Pennsylvania at the time... Today, there's even a town in Pennsylvania called Shippensburg which was named after the Shippen family... Since Peggy was from an upper class family, she and her family were always invited to the parties, afternoon tea gatherings, and fancy type gatherings of the time... These gatherings generally took place during the week while Benedict was away from home... At one of those gatherings, Peggy met John Andre who was a British military intelligence officer, Peggy had no clue who he was nor did she have the inclination to ask what he did... During one of those gatherings Andre asked Peggy if she was married and she said she was married to General Arnold... Andre asked what her husband was doing away from home during the week, she said he was working closely with George Washington... When asked what her husband was doing specifically, she said she really didn't know but when he comes home then she'll ask him... When Benedict arrived home that weekend she asked him what he was doing, and he told her exactly what he was doing, he sat down at the table with Peggy and drew her a map to show her exactly where the west point location is... When Benedict left for work on Monday, Peggy was again going to one of those fancy gathering, this time she took the drawn map with her to show Andre... At that gathering he asked her if he could keep the map and she told him he could... Several months later, Andre was captured by Washington's troops and was searched, they found the map in his pocket... When Andre was asked how he got that map he explained it was given to him by Peggy Shippen Arnold, the wife of General Arnold and that General Arnold himself drew the map... An arrest was immediately ordered for Arnold... Arnold heard of the arrest order so he fled to England without any hesitation, he knew he would be hanged for such absent mindedness on his part and he never took the time to explain what happened... The west point location is where the West Point Military Academy now stands... GZ
