Ohio City Begs For Federal Help To House Illegal Migrants

The City of Springfield, Ohio, is begging for federal help with a housing crisis caused by a surge of illegal migrants.
City Manager Bryan Heck on Monday sent an urgent letter to Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and Tim Scott (R-SC) asking for federal aid.
The city manager explained that Springfield is struggling to accommodate up to 20,000 new migrants from Haiti.
“Springfield has seen a surge in population through immigration that has significantly impacted our ability as a community to produce enough housing opportunities for all,” Heck wrote.
“Springfield’s Haitian population has increased to 15,000 – 20,000 over the last four years in a community of just under 60,000 previous residents, putting a significant strain on our resources and ability to provide ample housing for all of our residents,” he said.
The city is set to have 2,000 more housing units over the next three to five years, but “this is still not enough,” the letter said.
“Again, without further support at the Federal level, communities like Springfield are set up to fail in being able to meet the housing needs of its residents,” Heck wrote.
The letter was presented by Senator J.D. Vance (R-OH) during Tuesday’s hearing of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. Scott is the committee’s ranking member and chairs a subcommittee on housing.
Vance noted that Springfield is “trying to build 5,000 new housing units, which is a very Herculean task in a town of about 55,000 people.”
“But it’s also hospital services, it’s school services. There are a whole host of ways in which this immigration problem, I think, is having very real human consequences,” Vance said.
Other cities have suffered similar crises over the last two years.
New York City has seen an influx of more than 180,000 illegal migrants over the past two years and is still housing many of them. Chicago is currently paying to shelter about 13,000 of the more than 44,000 migrants who have arrived in the city over the last two years. Both cities have scrambled to find housing as their finances were squeezed.
Overall, around 12 million migrants have entered the country illegally under the Biden administration.
There have been more than 9.5 million migrant encounters as well as about 1.7 million illegal migrant gotaways, according to immigration authorities.
Earlier this year, immigration surged to become the top issue on voters’ minds, bumping inflation down to second place, polls showed.
Upon taking office, President Joe Biden reversed many of former President Donald Trump’s border policies aimed at slowing the flow of illegal immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, including the Remain in Mexico policy, which forced illegal migrants to stay on the Mexican side of the border while they awaited asylum hearings.

Because illegals are designated refugees and considered homeless, they get priority for housing while our seniors are going without air conditioning in the heat because they can't afford Ohio's excessive electric costs. Old Americans - as opposed to New Americans - are clearly considered verboten by Biden & Co. For this one reason alone I am voting for Trump. My neighborhood, pre-Biden, was very safe. Now close to a resettlement area, the crime is outrageous.

I just escaped Springfield Ohio and moved out of state because it wasn't safe there anymore. The mayor rents houses to illegal Haitians, and the city manager is with the Woke church that brought them all here in the first place. These two want federal $ to launder and line their pockets with. We citizens are losing everything because of Biden and corruption.

A brilliant plan needs to be developed to send them back to their home countries. Preferably a long conga line that won't cost taxpayers any more money. A worker at our grocery store said this morning he's stocking shelves to make ends meet while the illegals fill their grocery carts and scan their government free money card to pay with big smiles on their faces.

When my family, both sides immigrated from Sweden, the last thing they wanted was to be a burden on the American and Canadian citizens. They spoke Swede only at home and worked very hard to be productive. One side ended up owning a shipyard and my Grandfather was approached by US Navy contract people during World War 2 about a Tug contract he had quoted. They tried to get him to pad it for more profit, he refused saying we have enough. I am so proud to think people had integrity at one point in this country. These people now coming here and other countries around the world are there for the free stuff. Something to see people in places like Stockholm wearing desert garb.

If Kamala Harris had done her job as border tsar and addressed the root causes, they wouldn't be here. Haiti is a real mess and a failed state. Many of these people might actually qualify as legitimate refugees but when the sheer numbers of them overwhelm the local ability to assist them, you have real problems. Since they are here, the cost to the community might be greater in terms of crime and homelessness if we don't assist them, but this is a burden that American communities shouldn't have to bear because it is overwhelming.

@MissRight Harris did her job, her real job. Her job was to pretend she cared about the future of our country while funneling as many illegals into the southern border as possible.
We're just still confused think our elected leaders actually do what they are supposed to.

This is the consequence of Biden’s presidency. Our communities are overwhelmed with foreigners flooding our infrastructure, committing crimes, squatting on our land. We need to end this invasion. We need to vote out the dems, replace the incompetent heads of DHS, and all have the stomach to support mass deportation, even when it starts to look ugly- because it will. Failure to do this means small towns like this will get swallowed up and turned in to ghettos.

@davidmaynard4930 I was describing the local population. I live in the area. Yes, the burden is unfair to U.S. citizens and they should be returned to their home country, but in the mean time, the effects of homeless and crime would be also deleterious to a very nice community. Oh, and these families are not cockroaches.

@davidmaynard4930 Louis Farrakahn referred to Jews as termites. In the Rwanda genocide, one side referred to the other as cockroaches. You may have legitimate political grievance with immigration policy but don't start dehumanizing illegal immigrants to the level of insects. It doesn't solve the problem.

@MissRight Let's be clear, my statement was neither racist like Farrakhan nor am I suggesting genocide. Your comparisons are over the top and offensive. But I'll compromise and let go of the cockroach term for sake of conversation since it seems to trigger you.
Let me take exception to your statement without it.
"they shouldn't be here, but for the most part" - Fort the most part? Each and every one of them knowingly broke our laws by coming here and they did it knowingly. For the most part tells me you think somehow any of them have the right to invade our country.
"most of them are just trying to get by" - What the hell do you think most Americans are doing right now. They "get by" at our expense. They have no investment in our country and will not add to our economy. They take, period.
"They are working with locals to improve their knowledge of our driving laws" - Sure, let's make it easier for them to come here and replace our blue collar workforce for a fraction of the wages. Let's do all we can to attract more because there are still a few decent jobs left. This is a leftist view.
"They aren't terrorists or drug gangs." - Aren't they? MS13 gang members are known to be a part of this infestation. Even Mayorkas had to admit there are illegals with terrorist connections already here as a result of hos own policies.
You're so sensitive about the word cockroach. Ask the parents of Jocelyn Nungaray, the dead 12 year old rape victim, the families of Ruby Garcia and Laken Riley who are both raped and dead if cockroach is just too mean.
I hope and pray you never have to feel the pain that comes with such horrendous acts. My guess is should you ever have to live through it you might just care less about what I call them.

@AnotherShapiroFa Then our “overworked” and “underpaid” teachers need to grow a spine and demand that their NEA and AFT unions (they are among the largest labor unions in the US) stop funneling their dues to the DNC. Instead, they continue to send dues and, in many cases staunchly cast votes in their union and the polls, for statists and hustlers like Chicago mayor Brandon Johnson—a pick straight out of the teachers’ union.

@mrsgarcia84317 You’re absolutely correct. Failing and left-leaning churches trying to fund their treasuries receive monies to help “transition” immigrants in communities across this country. They receive upwards of $190/person per night they house them and are free to then let them walk out into the community with no further obligations. The City of Springfield (who announced proudly that “Springfield is Haiti over 2 years ago when they invited this crisis), and a local cabal of lawyers actively work to settle Haitians in Springfield and teach them about the plethora of social welfare programs at their disposal. My former school district has been fighting a new housing development (a property parcel annexed without voter approval into city jurisdiction) in which the City of Springfield plans to build “affordable housing” (affordable for people taking taxpayer subsidies / not affordable for taxpayers in that district who will be immediately swamped with a constituency who has no skin in the game—they’re on the receiving end of the goods).
Springfield leadership over 45+ years have destroyed a once-innovative, dynamic, and prosperous community by replacing invention, productivity and families with race-hustling, welfare programs and “urban renewal” (i.e. demolition of industry and architecture and replacement with low-wage service economy). Over 60% of people in Springfield receive some for of taxpayer-subsidized assistance. It’s heartbreaking to see a place I love gutted, but then, as with all of these situations in our nation, someone is benefitting mightily, and voters (many of whom aren’t paying a dime) keep choosing it.

"Illegal" immigrants. Well, there is your clue. Answer is simple in my opinion. I know that Haiti has some major issues, but bringing them here is not the answer. I'm tired of working everyday to make ends meet and I make too much money for any type of help. I'm sorry, but my give a crap meter is low when it comes to "illegal" immigrants and their needs. What about the homeless issues we have here in America that involves actual citizens of our country? Yes, some may be due to drugs but not all. Not to mention children in the foster care system that needs our attention. How about we focus on that?.

Talk about election and Country interference? Nah, since that’s exactly what the Justice Department is not talking about, or investigating. How do people who believe in equality of opportunity co-exist with those who believe in equality of outcome? Our constitution is becoming just a piece of paper. Our laws are becoming subjective guidelines evaded by “clever” verbiage and rhetoric only to be enforced for political purposes. Our privileges as citizens of our country are diminishing by the day. Without those privileges and rights, we are merely residents of a failed state.

Why the fudge are they in Springfield? Seems random or coordinated on purpose to flip Ohio blue in the future? Get them out, send them to a blue state.

@WarrenAshton The red towns in blue states can't take any more abuse. The illegals and home-grown criminals escape the big cities and spread across the normal part of the state; it's usually blue cities surrounded by big, beautiful red country, less populated and so negatively affected by the nuts in the cities calling (voting) much of the shots. They also move some voters out here, adding to the strain.

Here's an idea, house them on a plane and then send that plane back over the border.

Why are we housing and feeding these people. For one thing most of them are illegal, so that should automatically disqualify for public assistance. Secondly, if they can get here they can take care of themselves. If they are unable then that's their problem, they can go back home. Better yet put them on a bus right back where they came from. This madness has to stop

That's a huge increase in population! Doesn't a city have the sovereignty to not accept new residents?

House them in jail. That’s where criminals are usually kept and they are breaking the law. Problem solved.

Pretty sure that all the immigrants who came to this country back in the day, didn't get housed or fed for free. If you don’t work, then you don’t eat. Don't like those terms then go back to where you came from, ya freeloading pieces of crap!

House them in detention centers. They can hire private buses to bring them in, hire private buses to take them out.

You can't absorb that many people in a short amount of time, the solution is to to find ways to house them but finding ways to close the border.

why are cities expected to provide housing? Isn't that the individual's responsibility? When my dad came (legally) he learned language (spoke only Ilokano), educated himself (became electrical engineer) and never expected free anything. Does not make sense to me.

When you have a city of 60,000 American citizens forced to absorb 20,000 Haitian immigrants, that city is going to be both drained of all its resources (literally everything from grocery stores to schools to medical care is being overwhelmed) and permanently changed beyond recognition. This is not an unintended consequence. This is intentional.

Is amazing to me that these issues of open immigration is not talked about in the legacy media. I remember a couple years ago when Ron Desantis sent 40 illegal immergrants to Martha’s Vinyard. The media had a field day. Accusing Desantis is of a political stunt. The good folks of Martha Vinyard sent the 50 packing. In there defense they did make them sandwiches before bounding the bus. The citizens that are going to suffer the most are the middle class and people of color. The dems are a party of elites and aristocracy’s. Like Robert De Niro and that other clown Clooney.
