It has never been this bad in this country (the USA), with over-the-top, obvious incitement, gaslighting, and propaganda, .

Some other countries, and to varying degrees, yes.

Cronkite, Huntley, Brinkley, et al, the pioneers of TV news controlled their bias and presented a pretty fair picture. Most print journalists, now long gone, largely did the same, with more facts and less advocacy and outright dishonesty. There was a clearer (though not always bright-line) distinction between reporting and opinion.

Today's media, print and electronic, is a high-stakes, big-dollar contest for clicks, eyeballs and ears, desperate to catch attention, and clamoring to influence the eyeballs and ears on behalf of its sponsors and subscribers.

Now, everything is identity-related.
