Scott:(slightly off topic)

Thanks for scientific clarification on gene patents. HGSI is just playing the same legal game all companies play one way or another. Case in point: just read about ethical gene issues surrounding the Human Genome Diversity Project (not the Human Genome Project) which is the process of collecting blood samples from genetic groups world-wide and storing data in a scientific database for study of migrations, human origins, etc. Seems like some groups (like American Indians) are hostile to the prospect of having their genetic heritage ripped off for somebody else's benefit. Although the collection activity is for scientific purposes, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that there are clear commercial prospects in them thar gene databases. This has caused much discussion among geneticists at the recent AAAS meetings in Philedelphia.

Let's just say that HGSI had more foresight and faster execution than their bested competitors in the great game. Long on HGSI. :)
