Regarding Dell Computer: <<American sales benefited from a near doubling of the consumer business thanks to the company's burgeoning website, which is now doing $4 million a day in business. By marketing to more sophisticated consumers and avoiding the low-margin "under $1,000" PC segment worked by rival Compaq (NYSE: CPQ), Dell kept its average desktop selling price at $2,000, down 4% from last year but still well above the industry average of $1,296 for PCs sold through retailers. " Wild exaggeration of rampant speculation over meaningless conversation " - Herb an eloquent appraisal ! S. Jobs' (SJ) conversation may have begun in August before J Cannavino (JC) left EDS and there has been a valid long term stumbling point . It may be the search firm , B. Gates , Markkula and / or possibly J. York (ex LG/IBM CFO) , as JC left IBM when L. Gerstner was chosen CEO . Keep in mind it was this search firm who brought Sculley in for his famed "get rid of the mainframes" IBM interview . JC has known SJ and BG a long time . What is coincidental is that BOTH SJ and JC will be keynoters in NYC at two different events 3/18/98 . SJ's "special" keynote at Seybold should have a positive effect on AAPL but the JC stuff is pure and meaningless speculation . Jim K.
