Short of a shakeout, but nevertheless a trend, is how Java IDEs are already associated with server deployment platforms.

Take last year's moves by Borland International and Netscape. Borland acquired CORBA<Picture> middleware supplier Visigenic Software with a plan to release an application server that's easily accessible from Borland's development tools later this year.

"The reality is if a customer buys components from different vendors, the onus is on the customer to make them work together," says John Senor, vice president and general manager at the Enterprise Access Division of Information Builders.

I think they will turn a profit as well.

Past actions don't exactly support this view. One of the outstanding aspects of the past year has been the new conservatism evident in both financial management and forecasting.

My expectation is that Del will take this opportunity (a Q with an acquisition in it) to provide against every conceivable contingency, building an expenses buffer to enable the next three quarters to show consistent profits.
