Why almost everyone assumes Kamala Harris has to pick a White man as a DEI "balance pick" for VP

“Kamala’s VP options,” posted one user on X, above an array of cream-colored paint samples labeled “Trustworthy Whites: 40 of our best whites.”

“The Daily Show” got in on the gag, repurposing the photo of Harris receiving the 2020 call from then-candidate Joe Biden that he had chosen her as his No. 2, with the caption: “Hello, is this the Midwest White Guy Emporium?”

If the tone was wry, it also reflected the near-instantaneous assessment that hardened among lawmakers in Washington, strategists and operatives throughout the country, and especially among conservative voters: that Harris, who is Black and Indian American must choose someone White as her running mate — and preferably a Straight White guy — that's the DEI balance pick that will make conservative swing voters more comfortable."

“I think it’s going to have to be a straight White man from a swing state. I think that’s the balanced ticket, if you will, that DEI swing voters are going to demand. I think that it’s something that people will want,” said Kimberly Peeler-Allen, co-founder of Higher Heights for America.

"I'm not saying they won't be qualified for the VP postion - there's many qualified, well-spoken straight-white me for Kamala to choose from - Kamala even found one to marry, so I'm certain there are many others, it simply requires extensive networking to locate one," said Peeler-Allen, "But being a DEI pick, many voters will assume they glossed over the white running mate's lack of qualifications simply because they diversity required picking a straight white man. But if Kamala chooses a well-spoken white man, I'm sure those mistaken assumptions will be assuaged."
