At the 4 minute mark he makes the interesting point that the Sahm Rule was created to fit the data - ie data mining to find a pattern as opposed to creating a thesis, understanding the context and then testing against the another data set.

It just means the data may be correlated if you back test as you extracted the indicator from similar data, but correlation does not mean causality.
