It was a throw-away line, and the word "alternative" was stressed in a way that if you caught it you got the message. But she did say she was beaten up badly about the comment and she wouldn't have repeated it. Live TV. Not much to do about it. Personally, I always admired her for that come-back. I don't remember the issue, but I remember thinking it was BS claim she was responding to.
