It honestly isn't as bad as it sounds, just two kids in college simultaneously for a year or two, plus possibly a new car when the older one graduates. Like most people we've been saving up for that one a long time, with maybe a third of the bill coming from 529 plans, another third from a CD ladder specifically built up for that purpose, and the remaining third (hopefully) coming from income. I just try not to think about the size of the bills. :-) None of it relies on selling stocks, so there is zero market risk involved.

Funding retirement is the opposite situation, much lower cash flows but continuing for decades. That is where a DGI or other equity based approach excels.
