Sam, the question of Korea and Japan's ability to scale the mountain of investment is certainly one of those things that makes investing interesting. Can Maxtor expand to meet what appears to be great demand?

I wonder if there will be a consolidation of Samsung and Maxtor? Seems logical that the different chabols could do themselves a service by trading under developed business units to play on strengths.

On another topic, Quantum has announced support of Intel for their newest interface, UltraATA/66. It seems to me that Quantum is providing some interesting technologies, but do they really give Quantum an advantage? Does Quantum make any money on this technology when other vendors choose to use it?

Quantum Announces Intel to Support Next Generation ATA/IDE Interface With Ultra ATA/66

Ultra ATA/66 to Be Supported by Future Intel Chipset Products

MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 19, 1998--Quantum Corp. (NASDAQ/NMS:QNTM - news) today announced at the Intel Developer Forum the next generation ATA/IDE Ultra ATA/66 disk drive interface, a Quantum patented-technology, which will be supported in future Intel chipsets.

Ultra ATA/66 not only doubles the bandwidth over ATA/33, but also significantly increases the robustness of the interface to the hard drive with improved cabling. Ultra ATA/66 leverages technology from the current Ultra ATA/33 interface, thereby preserving the total cost of ownership for personal computer (PC) users.

The interface also enhances data integrity to the ATA interface with improved timing margins and the use of Cyclical Redundancy Check (CRC). CRC is a data protection verification, which helps ensure the integrity of transferred data.

''Ultra ATA/66 is a valuable new technology which Intel supports as the logical next step before the transition to IEEE-1394 technology,'' said Patrick Gelsinger, vice president of Intel's Business Platform Group.

''Quantum is obsessed with information quality to lower the total cost of PC ownership for end users,'' said Ted Deffenbaugh, Quantum's director of technology management. ''With Ultra ATA/66, Quantum is taking the next step in a three-year plan of developing significant technology and industry standards that provide customers the highest level of information quality or Hi-IQ. Hi-IQ is Quantum's commitment to hold, deliver and protect our customers' information on our storage products.''

''As performance of desktop drives continues to accelerate over the next 18 months, Ultra ATA/66 is the most sensible option until 1394 becomes a viable interface,'' said Alexa McCloughan, group vice president at International Data Corporation.

Quantum is working with other hard disk drive and PC chipset vendors to establish Ultra ATA/66 as the new industry standard. Hard disk drives and PC systems implementing this new technology are expected to begin shipping in 1999.

The Ultra ATA/66 protocol lets host computers (PCs) send and retrieve data faster, removing bottlenecks associated with data transfers especially during sequential operations. Users of new PCs will need less time to boot their systems and open applications, a direct result of the improved throughput provided by Ultra ATA/66.

The Ultra ATA/66 protocol allows drives and systems to retain backward compatibility with the existing ATA standard. Because of this feature, installed PCs without the Ultra ATA/66 capability can use new disk drives in legacy ATA modes at transfer rates up to 33 MB/second. To take advantage of the high-speed 66 MB/second protocol, PC users in the installed base can purchase an Ultra ATA/66 PCI adapter card and cable.

About Quantum
