Chairman Fri. said business has slowed in Asia for the maker of yield-monitoring & process control systems. Asia is a slower market for us than it has been in the past, Keneth Levy told CNBC on Fri., citing the Korean monetary crisis & a manufacturing pullback in Japan.
As a result of the slowdown in Asia, Levy sees the continent generating a smaller portion of the company's total business. Levy said Asia typically would account for 40% of KLAC's business, & sometimes as much as 50%. Chip-equipment manufacturers have a heavy presence in Asia because the biggest makers of memory & other types of chips are located in the Far East.
The Chairman said the company's business in Europe & the U.S. is growing well, saying it is giving "very robust" indications going forward.
Levy added that he believes KLAC needs to focus on managing its business rather than its stock price, which he sees taking "care of itself" in the long term because of KLAC's strong growth prospects.
