My mom, who was a freethinking woman, went on a tour for a month in China when Mao was in charge. The main thing I remember her telling me was that the cities were nice and clean, but the countryside smelled like shit, as that's what they used for fertilizer. She also told me she met a rural doctor in a village that was 'paid' the same as the field workers. He was appreciated more though.
