Great response Alan!

Its clear that the money is in the back-end enterprise servers. Why? Because that is where the content lies and data needs to get pushed, pulled, yanked, and massaged on high bandwidth channels.

1 GB bandwidth means faster transaction processing times for eCommerce applications - exactly what companies like IBM are targeting. It also means faster backend data movement for the ISPs of which IBM's Global Network is. IBM's GN used on the backup pool is an indication to me that they are toying with the idea of moving fibre throughout their secondary networks and possibly into the backbone. Its a slow migration process, I feel.

When OC3 bandwidth requirements are suggested, someone needs to meet the ends. Let fibre channel be the means to those ends. Let the clusters of servers behind the firewall run on fast fibre channels with the fc adapters sitting on those loops attached to administration systems. Let the fc routers and fc hubs be prevalent on the back end to manage the clusters.

ECommerce demands heavy transaction processing and i/o on the wire as well as on the bus cannot be a bottleneck. Thats something UW SCSI cannot compete with in the emerging world of ECommerce today. I think IBM sees that.

From the Adaptec thread:

I work with Symbios storage arrays on a daily basis and test them for performance
along with suppliers such as EMC. Without a doubt EMC has the edge. Symbios was
a part of us a while back (NCR) and was purchased by the big H.

They make SCSI chips, adapters, etc.. and have broken into the storage business as
well. They never really had a great market share for adapters, in fact adaptec is who
kept them under for so long. Working with Symbios on trying to debug bus problems
with their arrays and Adaptec adapters has always been Hell...Since they don't like
each other....on an engineering level anyway. Guess they will have to now.

All in all, I'm very interested to see what happens to their storage business. The fate of
their SCSI business is pretty obvious, ADPT will pick and choose what goes and
stays....but Adaptec Storage Arrays? I don't think ADPT has any experience in this
field...can someone correct me?

We provide large storage solutions to major businesses (10's of Terabytes...Yes-
10,000,000 MB) and use Symbios and EMC arrays primarily. EMC is THE most
aggressive company when it comes to marketing there equipment and this purchase
could stir some confusion in the industry which would give them the break they are
looking for.

Adaptec is not a big name in this industry because there have been a lot of problems
with their adapters and huge amounts of I/O, but we are begining to concentrate on
those problems and resolve them. People are beginning to request systems with
adaptec...primarily the 2944UW adapter.

Don't mean to ramble, but I guess I can conclude by saying that...Warehousing is a
many Billion $ a year business with enormous growth potential for anyone involved.
I
see 2 possible outcomes from this.

1.)Adaptec sits on storage and this purchase was only to monopolize the scsi market
(remember Future Domain?) If this is the case, make sure to go out and buy EMC -It'll
skyrocket even higher than already predicted.

2.)Adaptec plays it smart...uses their name and marketing power to take off in the
storage game(NOTE *)

* A final note: Adaptec will need to invest A LOT more into research/dev than they
are used to! So watch for a shaky financial picture over the next year.

JMO,

Will post this on EMCs site as well...hope I don't get fired for any info I may have
leaked.
