Whoa. Adaptec buys Symbios. Wonder what this means for DIMD's nacent Fireport SCSI card business?

Adaptec has been busy swallowing every piece of the SCSI market they can. They've bought most of the independent SCSI software (Corel SCSI and EasyCD Creator, EZ CD Pro, etc), they bought out Trantor, now they buy out the only significant independant SCSI controller chip maker. (for the uninitiated, Symbios was formerly NCR/ATT/Tolerant's SCSI chip business, most recently owned by Hyundai). I find it absolutely outrageous that I can't go out and find a $59 PCI scsi card to control my low speed peripherals (cdrom, cd-r, scanner, tape, etc). I don't WANT or need a $250 aha2940uw, its total overkill. The truth is, the Symbios stuff outperformed Adaptec and was cheaper. not cheap enuf, but still cheaper. Sigh.

I almost caved in today and went long for a point. I think I'll wait a couple days now. The Voodoo II board isn't passing the ole "bake test".
