Lou. Question regarding your option scenario where you sell your long position at a loss and take the tax write-off while replacing it with calls.

I have done this before and my accountant has advised me that I can't take the loss if my call position was established within 30 days of sale...that, in effect, I am subject to wash rule.

Anyone care to comment?

PS. I agree that the recent revival has drawn some new energy to this thread that is more in your face and less thoughtful (no names so only wear it if it fits). Let's hope we can maintain the inf. focus and skip hot tip-hype scenarios.

I don't believe that would be it is "perfectly legal".
You stated:

"Let say this person bought Informix at 25 a year and
a half ago. This person now sells all his shares
(lets say 1,000,000) and buys (10,000) Informix 5
calls) the small premium is more than set off by the huge tax
write-off -- thirty days later the person can execute the March calls and get back his original number of shares -- all perfectly legal."

Doesn't the "wash-sale" rule disallow a loss if you purchase Call or Put options on a "substantially identical" stock or security within 30 days.

"... Universal Data option is good for more than just storing pictures and sounds -- it is ultimately the means of doing away with more than 70% of application development and 90% of maintenance within a Fortune 500 company"

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The Informix product (base and addons like udo) is a database, nothing more nothing less. A damn good one I have to say - I've developed with the Informix and the competition, and it beats the pants off them - but it's still just a product that lets you store and retrieve data. So how will it help with app development/maintenance?

Peter

btw I agree with just about everything else you said <g>
