Phil, Although I hadn't thought of the snake oil analogy, I was going to point out that treatments for dying patients without viable alternatives frequently do not place insurance coverage at the top of their list. I'm not sure what the reimbursement policy is (and I assume that it varies from plan to plan), but it is my understanding that in the area of cancer therapeutics, off label use is rather common.
