Britain gives $6.6 million emergency aid to Sudan
07:41 p.m Feb 19, 1998 Eastern

LONDON, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Britain said on Thursday it had given four million pounds ($6.6 million) in emergency aid to help Sudanese refugees and pledged more money would follow.

Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed in fighting in southern Sudan since the rebel Sudan People's Liberation Army began a civil war in 1983.

''The security situation in southern Sudan remains highly volatile and continues to give grave cause for concern,'' Secretary of State for International Development Clare Short said in a statement.

''This is very much an initial response. As other emergency needs emerge, we will help where we can and who we can throughout the country.''

The initial four million pounds -- targeted at more than four million refugees in the south as well as those living in refugee camps near Khartoum -- will be channelled through the United Nations.

Last year Britain gave more than three million pounds of food aid to Sudan.
