There are about 10,000 atomic bombs. The biggest about 100 megatons. But one or 10 megaton are more normal. If they all targeted people rather than warships, military bases etc and were carefully not overlapping, they couldn't cover much. Say they average 30 km x 30 km of obliteration each, that's only 10 million km2.

That's about 1000 km x 1000 km.

USA is about ten times that. So even USA can't be totally fried. Deserts, mountains, lakes don't need to be targeted, so there would be gaps.

These days, the bombs are exploded at optimum height so they make fire but not craters. That means less radioactive dust. Hiroshima has been occupied for many decades. Chernobyl was problematic because they have a lot of fissile atoms and fires of reactors make a lot of radioactive dust.

The southern hemisphere has few targets. It's mostly ocean. African countryside won't be targeted. Australian cities would be fine but the outback is vast with people sprinkled around. Same with New Zealand. And south America.

USA won't be targeting NZ. Russia might target a dozen cities, or even 100 towns. That leaves a lot unscathed.

Subsistence farming will keep a few people going. Local fighting over food sources would think any over crowding.

Nuclear winter wouldn't last long. The atmosphere is very wet and washes itself quickly. Giant volcanoes and huge fires cloud the skies for not many weeks. Even the filthy air from China washes out after not many weeks. Japan gets a lot, but not much is detectable in USA.

USA will be the biggest loser, because it had so much to lose. Jungle people don't have much to lose and they are not worth targeting anyway. USA systems are also dependent on systems. Even COVID disrupted supply chains. Nothing will work. Trucks require fuel. Refineries will be gone.

Putin threw the steering wheel out the window in the game of chicken. I recommend listening to 1812 Overture. Think about Barbarossa. Charge of the light brigade. Read about Napoleon's Grande Armee. Russia won't surrender and be conquered. They can obliterate USA Eurostan better than USA can obliterate the vast hinterlands of Russia.

Just a movie; won't happen in real life. The dome over the Southern Hemisphere will protect them.

After a global nuclear war, the residents of Australia must come to terms with the fact that all life will be destroyed in a matter of months.
