<<By the way, David is going to be at a conference in San Francisco in March, and I might join him for a few days. Which restaurants in the area do you recommend?>>

Sorry, you will have to ask the NoCal folks on the thread. I can help you with LA and NY. However if you are in San Fran get David to take you to Napa or Sonoma (less than 1 hour from san Fran) for a least one night. The following are my recs in order of preference:
Auberge de Soleil--Romantic and great food
Sonoma Mission Inn-- in Sonoma. I you liketo mix good wine with spa treatments
Meadowood-- How about wine and golf. Excellent food.

Restaurant recommendation

My favorite is Guaymas in the little town of Tiburon (gorgeous town), which is about 30 minutes North of San Francisco by car in Marin County. It is the next point north of Sausalito. The restaurant is on a pier and when the ferry boats dock (which is an excellent way to get to the restaurant, but don't miss the last departure time) it looks like the boat is going to crash into your table. It is a coastal style of Mexican food, all delicious. Not a buritto, enchilada, or taco on the menu. While it is Mexican food, it isn't cheap though and I'd put it at $$$ on a scale of $$$$ being expensive. Great tequila drinks too. Check out these sites for a review of it and more:

Damn that was hard to type @;->

Check out the Guaymas review. We drive and hour and a half to get there and it is my all time favorite restaurant. Definitely make a reservation though. When it is nice out, sit on the patio if you can, they have heaters, but take something warm to wear (request patio when reservations are made). The view of SF across the bay is awesome. I've been there a bunch of times with friends and we always want to go back again.

If you drive, take a quick cruise through the town of Belvedere, which is built on a hill that sticks up out of the Bay, right next to Tiburon, it is pretty cool to see and only takes a few minutes to drive through.
