<..that portends the ascendency of IP..>

Fwiw, IP does NOT preclude ATM. Both are essential.

For instance:

=======
"..IP and ATM are nevertheless not competing against each other, said
Chris Williams, vice president for strategic marketing at ATML, a
privately held ATM technology developer based in Cambridge, England.
"Internet Protocol and ATM are complementary. Internet Protocol will
be the dominant service, which runs on top of the ATM transport,"
Williams said.

Network managers at large multinationals are keen on ATM, said
Williams. "They are still comfortable about ATM, which is still
very well regarded for future use," he said..."

CPE stands for Customer Premises Equipment (generally owned by the customer)
CLE stands for Customer Located Equipment (generally owned by the carrier)

Both terms used by service providers

IP and ATM are not mutually exclusive, iMCI advertise a maximum 4 router hops for higher performance - this is achieved by having the core of their IP network switched over ATM. the telcos gain large operational savings by consolidation of transport over ATM - it's why they and the ITU developed ATM - they may however PRESENT other services, e.g pure IP service that actually runs over ATM

Qwest, Williams, UUNet and others are indeed attempting to jump start multiservice delivery of services on IP based networks. If they pull it off then yes, the future of ATM "CPE" (Customer Premise Equipment) and even ATM edge switching equipment does look bleak. However, as I said before, it remains to be seen whether multiservice over frame based nets can deliver the quality of service that ATM can deliver. There's no doubt that frame based nets are better for data...but when in comes to mixed traffic (voice, video, and data) the architecture of ATM is superior. Whether or not the gap in performance between frame (IP) and ATM can be narrowed enough to make these differences non discernable is the question. If it can than IP will win. If not, ATM appears to be a better choice.

I should go on to mention that ATM switching will continue to be at the core of these IP nets AND as the IP nets get congested, voice and video performance will suffer. The pendelum may swing on this one....simply delaying the future of ATM CPE deployment in a major way.
