I’m simply pointing out that there are other more likely causes for death rates from Covid being lower.
Let's test your "smoker" excuse:

AZ: 12.7% smokers, 4,726 COVID deaths per 1M pop
MS: 17.4% smokers, 3,711 COVID deaths per 1M pop

OR: 12.4% smokers, 2,315 COVID deaths per 1M pop
FL: 11.3% smokers, 4,433 COVID deaths per 1M pop

Those are just two comparisons. I'm sure if you correlated the two number from one state to the next, you'll find a wide divergence in the numbers.
