Some insight from Mike Sweeney, NetworkGuys, Inc. why DSL will keep exploding.

The phone companies are as good as dead (at least as we know them today) They will be forced to join the crowd and become IP-centric ICP's offer new services such as IP phone - or be pushed out of business.

Many people (inlcuding the phone companies) are still only looking at
the "IP Telephony tree" instead of the bigger "telecommunications
market" forest. For instance, virtual IP PBX's that utilize IP
Telephony will soon help make telecommuting viable/compelling for many
additional tens of millions world wide. The high through-put of DSL will
become compelling to those tens of millions of telecommuters connecting
to their companies' LANs and even more compelling to the companies
employing those telecommuters to whom time is money. Millions of
companies will subsidize the DSL lines for their telecommuters! This
will drive IP Telephony and the ICP concept ever faster.

As for the slim 64K bandwidth-use needed for IP Telephony, it will be
thrown in with 1.5Mps-8Mps DSL connections for very low additional cost
- or for free. This "free" bandwidth use, that is used to replace
typical phone bills, will help telecommuters and non-telecommuters alike help justify the cost of obtaining DSL lines.

Simply put: Most residential phone customers now pay $30 - $100 per
month for local and long distance phone service. IP Telephony service
will cut the cost of those voice communications to $10 per month - or
eliminate the cost completely. This savings (in the minds of many
consumers) can be applied toward a $45 per month DSL connection - that
includes unlimited voice service - to help justify that cost (especially for those customers that would like to justify obtaining the other advantages of a DSL connection in the first place). This type of thought process is used by millions of consumers who collectively spend hundreds of millions every day to get something for "free".

The unequaled cost advantages of IP Telephony together with a huge
increase in the number of telecommuters world wide will make DSL very
compelling to many tens of millions in the next 2 to 5 years .

With their phone service revenues evaporating the RBOC's will soon be
forced by economic reality to participate in this market. In other words they will have next gen technologies such as DSL and IP Telephony shoved down their throats - which they will deploy - or go out of business.
