Periodically, mass psychosis breaks out and the crazies grab the wheel for a while. I take your point. But "for a while" is not the same as the century long Dark Ages." This current scenario with its anti-science, anti-reason, indifference to reality bent has the critical earmarks of the latter. Civilization doesn't have centuries to recover from this cycle. We will have destroyed ourselves by then. Not sure that this matches the short-cycle events you mention, the breakouts, rather than being a persistent trend. To recover from a breakout requires a critical mass of sanity and the institutions of same. The breakouts you mentioned were widespread yet confined, superficial. They did not upend civilization infrastructure. Not sure this is that.
