I think we were meant to spread to the planets and the stars, but not as Earth evolved, surface dwelling humans living under the thinnest of atmospheres. We were meant to create spacefaring machines that don't need to breathe, eat or drink at all

If Earth were the size of a basketball, the atmosphere would be like a very thin layer of plastic wrapped around it.
