<< I like Uniphase much better than Ciena >>

Asking me to pick between the two is like asking me to choose between children. Or choosing between blondes and brunettes. Their both great! (BTW, I do prefer brunettes <g>)

<< It's growing faster, >>

I would have to disagree. UNPH has been public since late 1993. They have TTM sales of $142 million. CIEN didn't even generate sales until the latter part of 1996, and didn't even come public until 1997. They went from zero revenues to $455 million in less than a year and a half. To illustrate my point further, CIEN has damn near earned as much net income in the TTM as UNPH has had sales.

<< and has a broader customer list >>

Yes you are correct. That makes UNPH a little safer, but less of a pure play on WDM. UNPH has some units that have declining or stagnant sales. They sell lasers for semiconductor inspection and things like that. CIEN focuses purely on WDM and bandwith. UNPH is a component supplier (although they are broadening their horizons) and CIEN is a systems provider which are less susceptible to pricing pressures.

<< Uniphase sells into the HFC Cable TV supplier market as well. >>

That's one of the declining businesses that I was referring to. Good thing the WDM business is becoming an ever increasing portion of UNPH revenues.

Both companies are 2 favorites of mine but CIEN seems like the better value to me right now. Last October I was buying UNPH at a split adjusted 29 5/8 because it seemed the like the better value. Today I'm buying CIEN because I think they are the better value.

Whoops! I almost forgot, this is the YHOO thread! Sorry, I won't bring up CIEN or UNPH anymore.
