I believe I am the first one to quote Mencken 20 years ago on SI, and I have his book in my library.

Mencken was not a libertarian, he was a full blown left wing liberal.

And why would you quote that below when Trump is the sweetheart of both the evangelicals and Putin!!??

Mencken was an athiest, and anti communist.

Do you even understand what Mencken is saying in your post?

PS when Mencken said: "simple answers are usually wrong", he was talking about people like Trump and MAGA.

Mencken would have hated Trump.

Because Trump is stupid.

Mencken was an individualist and a libertarian. His views on Communism were not nuanced.

"Communism, like any other revealed religion, is largely made up of prophecies. When they fail to come off its clergy simply say that they will be realized later on. Thus, if we have another boom, they will argue that the collapse of capitalism is only postponed. The fact that the greatest booms ever heard of followed Marx's formal prophecy of the downfall of capitalism is already forgotten, just as millions have long since forgotten the early Christian prophecy that the end of the world was at hand. The first Christians accepted postponements as docilely as the Communists of today."

H. L. Mencken
