RE: Sony HiFD Hi all, Any more updates on the Sony HiFD? I looked at their Web page but no solid shipping or price info. But you have the technical details. I tried Marcus Allen Web site and i got the following macweek info which is very old. In that Sony has said that they will give price/shipment details in 60 days but now it is over 4 months. So, i was curious. Also, did they give a full demo at Comdex? Anyone know of some beta testers for the product? If the product should ship in summer, there should be some test units already, right? Thanks. i am attaching the macweek info below. -senthil OCTOBER 17, 1997 VOLUME 11 ISSUE 40 HiFD to support new, old floppies Sony Corp. and Fuji Photo Film Ltd. last week announced a 200-Mbyte floppy drive that will be backward-compatible with current 1.44-Mbyte media. The Tokyo-based companies have named the future product HiFD, an acronym for High Capacity Floppy Disk. It will accommodate standard 3.5-inch disks, as well as similarly sized, 200-Mbyte cartridges from Sony, Fuji and other manufacturers. Sony said the product will be introduced in Spring 1997 and will be on display at November's Comdex/Fall '97 show in Las Vegas. HiFD will use a PRML (partial response maximum likelihood) head that does not touch the disk surface, providing longer media life, Sony and Fuji said. The drive, spinning at 3,600 rpm, will be capable of a maximum sustained data transfer rate of 3.6 Mbytes per second, Sony said. By contrast, current 3.5-inch floppy mechanisms can transfer data at 0.06 Mbytes per second, according to Sony. Pricing and availability for the drive and media will be announced within 60 days, a Sony spokeswoman said.
