The invasion of Ukraine would be legal if the US allowed the UN Security Council to convene on resolution 2202 over Ukraine's bombing of the Donbass in February 2022 and Ukraine rejected the ceasefire demand, just as it did the demands from Germany and Russia. Technically, Russia has invoked the UN's Responsibility to Protect rule to intervene on behalf of ethnic Russians who were fleeing the Donbass. They have legal basis since the US invoked the same rule in Libya where they lied about protecting civilians. Instead, the air power and special forces was used to back the jihadist rebels in the overthrow of the government.
