Jim, You are missing the main point of the Intel forum, they are trying to move their entire line, across all spectrum of users, high to low end, onto the P6 (Pentium II) microarchitecture. Part of this strategy is to migrate all PCs to the Slot 1 or higher design, thereby making the Slot 7 motherboards obsolete. This leapfrogs the Pentium, but in the process makes the K6 and Cyrix chip yesterday's doo doo. Whereas, if you buy a P II Covington, and you have a few more bucks after getting hooked on your first PC, you can upgrade to a higher level chip with the same motherboard. Lo and behold, a second profit for Intel. There may be other reasons as well for this strategy, such as agreements with MSFT etc. about architecture standards for the next operating system release, or other software hardware considerations. All in all, there are also economies of scale in a modular system where you add this or that to the same basis system. Regards, David S. Long on Intel (and Iomega too)
