Jim, I'm far from an expert, but there are two 56K protocols and they are incompatible with one another. Also, my modem is a 56k X2 but I've yet to connect above 28.8. I think the service provider's equipment has a lot to do with it.

The phone company might know, but 3com would more likely know: I think that you use the local phone co because you will want a local number=long distance calls for internet are expensive.
Your internet server should be one that can connect you. Although mine said they could and now they cant...yet!
