The debt problem is a runaway freight train Jamie. Not much to do who is the President.

Compounded interest does it's math.

The USA was very very powerful nation Up till about Vietnam, though Japan tapped in big during the Korean War. Got off it's feet during that time. Not having a huge Defense budget helped.

Wars cause a nation to go into debt BIG Jaime.

The UK found that out in WW1. Went from most powerful nation on the Planet to bankrupt in one go.

Lots on the subject matter.
