There is absolutely no connection to the Internet.

Paper ballots are generated that can be used later as permanent records.

Used for audits of the election if needed.

The machine is not needed.

They should have "backdoor" access. Fix software glitches etc.

I don't think there are many Electronic Designers who would make a carte blanche statement like that. They wouldn't last very long.
You're right, there aren't many who are qualified to make a statement like that.

Fortunately, I know a few. And Eric is right. It's not too hard to design a secure voting machine. It'd be just as secure, if not even more so, as a regular ATM.
