Sure, maybe if I wait I might be able to get it for a cheaper price, but then again maybe not.
Perhaps we'll see the teens, I don't care I have lot's of patience.

I believe there's more upside than downside now and that we still haven't heard all the news.

Quantex using a Quadrant DVD card......................................

March 01, 1998, Issue: 903
Section: Reviews

Power, Performance and DVD-

Jonathan Blackwood

Now that DVD-2 drives (capable of reading CD-Recordable discs) have hit the streets, look for DVD to become standard equipment on mainstream computers in the coming year. Quantex's latest DVD offering-the Quantex QP6/300 SM-4xSE-is a fine performer, with features galore.

The QP6/300 SM-4xSE we tested came loaded with a 300MHz Pentium II, Intel's 440LX chipset, 64MB of SDRAM (expandable to 512MB), an IBM 6.4GB (nominal) Ultra DMA hard drive, a Toshiba DVD-2 drive with a Quadrant DVD decoder board, 512KB of pipeline-burst cache and a K56flex modem. Sound comes courtesy of an Ensoniq PCI sound card and Altec Lansing three-piece ACS400 speakers. Video is delivered via a Diamond Viper 330 AGP video card with 4MB SGRAM and an excellent 17-inch (16.1-inch viewable) monitor with 0.28mm dot pitch. Windows 95 and Microsoft Office 97 Small Business Edition come preloaded.

All the usual ports are present, including twin USB connectors, and NTSC for video output. Of the nine drive bays, six are available. In addition, one PCI and two ISA slots are free. The shared PCI/ISA slot is taken.

Performance is quite good for a 300MHz system with DVD. The QP6/300 SM-4xSE earned a WinScore of 161 through the now-magic formula of a Pentium II processor, an nVidia video chip and the Ultra DMA hard drive. The benchmarks were good across the board, but the cached-disk throughput and Word performance were exceptional. Quantex was one of four manufacturers to earn an "excellent" rating on our service and support survey (Features, August 1997). The Quantex QP6/300 SM-4xSE is definitely worth a look, and it replaces the HP Pavilion 8190 DVD system (which had a WinScore of 128) on our WinList.
