Bosco, my apologies for not answering. I missed the comeback. With
the 308X installations it is actually the microcode portion of the
hardware that is in question. It may also be true that the software
running on these machines that run the towers is also deficient but I
have not researched that issue. Microcode is software that runs
within a system below the External User Interface so it is not
accessible by system programmers only microcode writers from the
hardware vendor. So if the vendor (IBM in this case) does not test
and correct the old hardware to make it Year 2000 ready then there
could be problems. The 308X currently is not going to be tested.
TPF is a software application used by airlines as an operating system
to run, among other things, their airline reservation systems. I dont
believe it has anything to do with air traffic control and towers.
That is FAA code. As far as ISLI I believe they have some tools for
Y2K projects. "Factory 2000" comes to mind and may be one. But what
they really have is project management skills so I believe they come
more under services providers who will take on a contract to fix the
company's year 2000 problems. In addition, they have a robust
portfolio of other software offerings having nothing to do with Y2K
that will serve them well as we pass the year 2000. So I see the Y2K
issue as a way to generate significant short term revenue and profit
and also solidify new customers with their legacy software offerings
for the future. It is truly an enormous opportunity to grow their
business short term and provide the base to continue well into the
next century. Why then the downdraft? Few analysts or investment
houses understand the dynamics here. In that sense, there is no
"efficient marketplace" theory in play here. For more in depth
discussion of what ISLI does maybe PCSS or FYI can jump in and add
more info.
