James, strictly speaking, java tickers kill computer performance for a huge chunk of SI's users who are still using older 'de-caf' machines. Heck, I've actually got a killer machine and I still get throttled everytime I hit a site that starts up java (usually for no better reason other than to show me an animated flying monkey). Technology is a cool hammer, but it often fools people into thinking everything is a nail. You can can already edit your profile options, btw, to have qoute pages pop up in a new window so you don't have to leave the thread. -MrB
