Inode,
Do you really think insulin that gets an improved injector should qualify for a patent or extension?
The injector should qualify for the patent. Extension? I don't know. Big Pharma is the master at patent extensions.

This seems to be a whole different subject, though.
Shit that no one could ever benefit from, and other stuff that has been acknowledged as therapeutic for centuries or longer.
There's an acupunturist on every block here in Silicon Valley. It's a treatment that has been used for many centuries. Same with traditional medicine shops. They're supported by tons and tons of old-school literature, written in languages that are analogous to old-school Latin in Europe.

The problem is that acupuncture has thus far been incompatible with modern medical science. And that's because the results are highly inconsistent.

Some traditional medicine doctors here mix old school therapies with modern medicine. Results vary, but at least going with them is better than not going with anyone, and it sometimes beats doctors from HMOs like Blue Cross or Kaiser.
The patent system as it pertains to pharma is just ridiculous and needs to be controlled.
Again, that's whole can of worms that can be opened at a later date.
