Dave - Re: " to push an older standard (TDMA)? What is your opinion?"

Good timing for that question - I bought some more Qualcomm this morning - a real bargain after last week's debacle.

As for TDMA, this was an established standard (as ws GSM, it's European equivalent) when Qualcomm started touting CDMA. Thus, Qualcomm has been an innovator - NOT A COPY CAT like AMD.

The CDMA is clearly superior - it is being adopted at a rapid rate for those areas that are choosing their first wireless infrastructure. Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Sprint, PCSPrimeco, Russia, the Ukraine, Philippines, have all adopted CDMA and deployment is underway.

Unfortunately, the S.E. Asia crisis, Korea in particular, has sunk Qualcomm's stock - for the short term at least.

Now - the European Cellular companies are all looking at a new generation of cell phone technology to replace GSM. And guess what is in the lead? Broad band CDMA!

On top of this, several groups, including Vodaphone in England and DeTeMobil in Germany have demonstrated interoperability of GSM and Qualcomm's CDMA - a major milestone to see CDMA deployed in Europe. This will permit CDMA technology to be used in Europe "seamlessly" within the GSM infrastructure.

The CDMA technology was doubted by many - as to both it's performance, and feasibility, let alone the channel density improvement it offered. One by one, Qualcomm has succeeded in making CDMA a technological success and well on its was to a commercial success.

Qualcomm, in my opinion, will be the major leader in wireless communications in the next century.

On top of all this, Globalstar successfully launched its first four satellites last weekend. So the Qualcomm/Globalstar system is beginning to unfold and in about 18 months should be fully operational.
