Well, there are public things going on to try to get us into something that would be hard for Trump to get us out of. With the election results, this is crazy.

In the Spanish - American war, the USS Maine was sunk in the Havana Harbor by us to provocate the war. Nothing is beyond possibility.

Yes. The gas pipeline was cut by us. Russia will not respond to last minute provocations. They can wait two months, when sanity returns.

Then, they get to keep Crimea (populated by Russians), and maybe the Eastern provinces (Dombas and three others), mostly populated by Russians. The west settles with another agreement that the Ukraine will not be part of NATO. Maybe the EU. A demilartized zone. Works for me, if we get past WW3 in the next two months.
