To be fair, the head of the Department of education, Edward Bennett Williams, helped me out a lot. I was assigned to teach Math at South Bronx High School on 156th Street and Saint Ann's Ave in September 1985. I wrote a letter to the Dept. of Education asking for tips on my first job. I got a personal response from Dr. Edward Bennett Williams, who, by the way, had a Ph.D. in Philosophy and he basically told me that with ghetto kids you have to be very professional and keep your distance. Your power as a teacher lies in making them learn. Don't get personal with them. Just teach. If you reprimand them, keep your distance when you do so. Never get within arms length distance of them. Don't get emotionally involved in their lifestyle or way of life. If you make them learn, they will respect you, listen to you and behave. Just teach.

It was very helpful.
