The source to understand the West Coast quakes is an article that came out in the New Yorker a few years ago, really well written and full of insight. For a less refined look, check out the middle episode of the documentary series Brink of Disaster.

(The first and third episodes of that series are about the effect of big storms on New York, and the coming disappearance of Miami beneath the waves, respectively. Again they are worth watching but you can also find better coverage of the issues in New Yorker articles.)

One of my 'life' goals is to kick the bucket before the overdue big quake levels Vancouver.
