You also could have lost it all, in Enron or any of the countless other investments that just did not work the way people thought they would. It's called "Security" for a reason. It's good to invest on your own, too. I must say that my AAPL, which I have held for 26 years now, has far outperformed my Social Security entitlement, but how many people are going to hit a 1000-bagger like that? Not many. I still appreciate my Social Security.
