I tried to find a brokerage to help me invest money about 15 years ago, again about 10 years ago, knowing nothing about the market. all they wanted to sell me was limited partnerships and garbage stocks. The commissions were outrageous. I actually asked about microsoft and compaq stock then and was told they didn't want to get involved in "g'ddam penny stocks". I walked away. I bought houses instead. I didn't make as much money, but I most certainly would have lost it with these criminals. Some friends of mine had a sizeable amount of money in the market in 1986, they lost it all because the broker put the money in his name then skipped the country. Some part of the industry has been cleaned up a lot, it is possible to find reasonably accurate information now. The mutual fund industry does tell people that risk is involved, investors simply ignore it.
The thing that fascinates me is that the brokerage stocks are often the best and safest investments, but no broker will recommend them, and they'll be fired for recommending another brokerage.
