From Reader's Digest, an influential medical journal: "Impotence Update: The first oral medicine for impotence, ...could be on the market in the next few months.... Current treatments can have some drawbacks: implants require surgery; vacuum-style devices can interrupt lovemaking; and injecting or inserting drugs into the penis can be uncomfortable. Soon three experimental oral medicine may alleviate the discomfort and embarrassment of these traditional therapies for some patients:
Sildenafil blocks an enzyme in the penis that otherwise destroys a chemical produced during sexual stimulation. The longer that chemical stays around, the better chance of an erection.
Apomorphine affects centers in the brain associated with initiating erections
Phentolamine is a oral version of an injected medicine that allows dilation of penile blood vessels, causing an erection.

Some patients who have tried the drugs say they work easily-and have few side effects. For more information contact the American Foundation for Urologic Disease at 800-473-0616, or check the Web at www.iiem.org.

Comment: It is my understanding that phentolamine and apomorphine are reasonably far from approval. I don't believe either has an NDA filed. This would suggest that this is another coupe from the crack PR team at Pfizer. Free advertising. Have a note in Reader's Digest, people ask their docs about the "pill," and surprise! only Viagra is available (conveniently approved soon after this note.) What do you think, am I correct?

I think Vivus ought to offer the PR people at Pfizer a lot of money to work for them. PR is FREE; ads cost a lot of money.
