Yes, abortion is legal in England, but it's subject to certain restrictions:

  • Abortion Act 1967: This act legalized abortion in England, Wales, and Scotland on certain grounds.

  • Gestation limit: Abortions are legal up to 24 weeks into a pregnancy.

  • Doctor approval: Two independent doctors must approve the abortion.

  • Location: Abortions must be performed in an NHS hospital or a place approved by the Secretary of State.

  • Later-term procedures: There are stricter conditions for later-term procedures, such as in cases of severe fetal abnormalities or risks to the mother's health.

Some other things to know about abortion in England include:

  • The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 lowered the gestation limit from 28 weeks to 24 weeks.

  • In 2018, women in England and Wales were allowed to take the second of the two abortion pills, misoprostol, at home.

  • In 2022, there were 251,377 abortions for women resident in England and Wales, the highest number since the Abortion Act was introduced.

  • Access to abortion varies by region depending on the services commissioned at a local level.

  • Some call for an overhaul of reproductive justice laws in the country.

I'm not certain this is the SAME article as I had several that referenced that "limit" during which the abortion was legal. However, I know this is one of the articles because it was in my history from the time when I was looking at it. But there were a couple others. Anyway, this gives decent coverage of the entire topic and ends up being referenced by a number of other articles:
