UC can see a No. 2 seed
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Winning out at home gives 'Cats a chance

BY MIKE DECOURCY
The Cincinnati Enquirer

Bob Huggins thinks about the NCAA Tournament selection and seeding process only when he's forced to - usually during phone calls from ESPN analyst Digger Phelps - but he talks about it with his UC Bearcats to keep them focused on less compelling games.

Like any coach, he does not know precisely what his team must accomplish, short of winning the Conference USA tournament and an automatic bid, to earn an NCAA invitation. He does not know how high UC can be seeded.

One thing is fairly certain, though: If the Bearcats win the rest of their games, they'll be seeded higher than if they don't. ''Digger calls me once or twice a week and talks to me about this,'' Huggins said. ''But I really don't know. We're doing such a good job of just doing what we need to do for that particular game that I don't want to get away from that.''

The No. 17 Bearcats (20-5, 11-2) return home to the Shoemaker Center for a Conference USA game at 6 p.m. today against last-place DePaul (7-19, 3-10). They will not be forced to leave again until the NCAA Tournament begins.

UC closes with three regular-season games at home, including Thursday against co-leader UNC Charlotte and next Saturday against contender Saint Louis. The Bearcats then play in the C-USA tournament March 4-7 at the Shoe, where they are 13-1 and have won 12 in a row. That means it is possible for them to finish with six more victories, which would give them an eight-game winning streak entering the tournament, nine wins in their final 10 games and a 26-5 overall record.
