BC got pounded yesterday by the first of three systems to come over 72 hours. The Pacific conveyor belt is at maximum speed right now -- yesterday's system originated near the Philippines, zoomed across the Pacific in no time, and blew threw southern BC quickly, delivering winds up to 120 kph with the usual accompanying ferry cancellations and power outages. The one compensation is that temperatures remain up to 10C above normal.

The third and biggest storm is expected on Dec.25th, and will deliver a lot of rain and wind.

A few days ago I mentioned that due to all the precipitation and temperature changes, avalanche risk had become very high in the mountains.

Yesterday four heliskiers and their guide were buried near Whistler when they triggered an avalanche. Luckily for them, there was another group of skiers nearby and they were dug up in time. All five are now recovering in hospital.

The risk will become even higher with these three systems, so the back country folks will need to be very cautious.
