I googled the history of Alta Vista. It was interesting. Quick review from memory was Compaq bought DEC which developed Alta Vista. Then compaq decided to monetize it by making a portal out of it and didn't emphasize its search features as much. Then its search declined relative to companies focused on search like google. Then eventually yahoo bought the portal with the altavista search. Finally yahoo shut down the portal.

Is/was there a vendetta against Andreessen? Most ridiculous was MSFT claiming Explorer was integral to Windows. That put Netscape out of business. Probably Alta Vista, too.
